Improver’s Piercing: A Five Week Mini Sawing Course with Emily
Apr

Improver’s Piercing: A Five Week Mini Sawing Course with Emily

A mini course designed to help people build on their skills. This consists of 3 taught sessions and 2 catchup sessions in between; it will stretch over 5 weeks. Over the course of the weeks, we will be focusing on piercing - cutting out a pattern/design from a piece of copper sheet, that will be mounted into a little wooden block so that it can stand up as an ornamental piece, perhaps to be kept in front of a window, allowing it to cast shadows. Almost like a glassless, stained glass window!

Week one will start with our piercing in copper. Week two is optional - this can be used as a chance to continue your piercing. In week three, we will start to tidy up our piercing, with the use of saws and files. Week four is also optional; in this session, we can continue the filing and sanding. Week five will be the final week; this will see us finishing the pieces, trying a little patina, and mounting in the wood blocks.

Only one of these will be taking place this year. The dates are as follows:

Thursday 17th April,Thursday 24th April*, Thursday 1st May, Thursday 8th May*, Thursday 15th May.

*The dates in italics are the optional/jewellery club dates. Those in bold are the compulsory dates.

If you wish to improve on existing skills, this is an ideal workshop; practise makes perfect!

Materials will be included. This course will take place in the evenings from 6-9pm at the Colour Factory in Winchester.

(Weeks Two and Four are essentially Jewellery Club; folks on the course will get first choice, but if the spaces aren’t filled, it will be offered to the wider Jewellery Club community.)

Please get in touch if you have any questions.

This course is £235pp. If you wish to pay in instalments, that is absolutely fine; please do get in touch! It’s tough out there!

Introduction to Ethical Jewellery Workshop with Emily

Introduction to Ethical Jewellery Workshop with Emily

A workshop introducing the concept of ethical jewellery; an opportunity to learn about the context and to learn how to make something new.

With the world the way that it is today, it’s no longer okay to just continue on our way and ignore the effect that current consumption (of everything) has on the world and the folks who live within it. Where the most capacity for big change is held by the big corporations, an individual - the entire population of individuals - has so much power just in where they spend their money. We have so many finite resources used at renewable rates, a huge waste problem, and so many people who are not responsible for the problem are left having to deal with the repercussions.

If you want to make a change, the trouble is often not knowing where to start.

So here we are, a start! Here is your introduction to Ethical Jewellery.

Jewellery is often considered one of the world’s oldest art forms; it’s had a long time to develop processes, understanding, materials but also, unfortunately, do a fair bit of damage. We’re lucky that there are some positive areas of the industry that have been running for a long time, but there are also some negative elements that have a considerable impact on the world. It’s important that we share the information, make some individual decisions and push for change!

The session will begin with an overview of what’s going on in the world in the context of jewellery (making and purchasing). You'll learn about the various origins of metal, gemstones and jewellery, and gain an assortment of knowledge on harmful jewellery practises and things to avoid. You’ll find out more about good jewellery initiatives and the people who are saving the (jewellery) world one little bit at a time!

Part two of the session will feature a little insight into the industry: how to identify what your jewellery is made from! This section requires that you bring your jewellery with you - whether it's something old and broken that you don't wear any more, or something that you're just curious about. Bring it along and learn what it's made from!

For the final part of the workshop, it is very important to separate what you want to keep from what you don't want any more, as the last section will see us melting some of your jewellery down and turning it into something new! Due to the nature of the workshop (its suitability for beginners and the introduction beforehand), there won’t be time to make anything complex, or forge out a ring. We shall be keeping the processes relatively simple - a bit of melting, a bit of shaping, a bit of soldering and the option to turn your little piece of metal into a pendant, earrings, or an embellishment for a simple silver ring.

If there is time, we can talk about what else you wish to do with it/with the remainder of metal. You could commission me to make something with the rest, or you could book in a workshop to make yourself something more complex!

***You will need to bring old jewellery with you. If you don't have any jewellery to melt, you're welcome to purchase some scrap from Emily to melt down, but you will need to let her know in advance.***

This workshop runs from 10am to 4pm. The workshop will take place at The Colour Factory in Winchester.

This workshop costs £100 per person; it includes all of the tools needed, and any silver or small gold findings** that may be required. Silver chains, silver rings and large gold components will be subject to an additional cost, if needed. These costs start at £10; please get in touch if you’d like to know more prior to the workshop.

To book, head to Emily's website: www.the-metalsmith.co.uk/workshop-bookings/introduction-to-ethical-jewellery

*This is all quite general information; there are certain situations where using plastic is necessary, and accessibility and affordability can impact peoples’ ability to make choices but for the great majority of people, this is not a reason.

**Findings are jewellery making components; this includes items like the loop that a pendant hangs from (running ring or bail), ear wires, butterfly backs, etc.

Landscapes & Gardens Photography Workshop with Simon Bray

Within the session, we will explore the theme of landscapes and gardens, finding inspiration in example images and photobooks, before working both individually and in pairs/groups to create new work and inform broader discussions about photographic techniques and ideas. We will then have time to review and evaluate the images that have been made and consider how to develop our approach in the future.

You will be required to bring your own camera, whether that’s a DSLR, mirrorless or your phone. Preferably you would have a camera that has the potential for full manual controls, but if you are confident using your phone, that will be sufficient.

Workshops are designed to be suitable for all levels and abilities. Simon will be able to offer bespoke advice and support for each photographer dependent on individual needs, including the basics of exposure and how to set up your camera to photograph the relevant theme. At the end of the workshop you will have created a new collection of images as well as learnt the required skills in order to continue photographing in your own time.

This workshop takes place on Sunday 13th July from 10am to 1pm; it costs £55 per person. If you wish to book onto the complete four sessions, there is a booking discount available.

To book, follow this link.

If you have any questions, please email: simonj.bray@gmail.com

Simon Bray is an award photographer based in Hampshire.

A new carving workshop - craft something out of wax and have it transformed into bronze.

Similar to the ring carving, this is a workshop for you to create whatever it is you wish, whether it be a simple pebble/geometric shape, or something more three dimensional. You could craft something contemporary, something full of textures, or even a little character!

The workshop will be three hours; you can choose the afternoon or evening slot. The wax will be posted for casting and will take 2-3 weeks to be cast and finished.

Materials, teas, coffees and biscuits will all be included.

This workshop takes place at The Colour Factory in Winchester.

An additional bonus for this workshop is that with each booking, a % of the price will go towards funding workshops in the community for displaced folks and refugees.

Fine Art & Still Life Workshop with Simon Bray

Within the session, we will explore the theme of Fine Art and Still Life, finding inspiration in example images and photobooks, before working both individually and in pairs/groups to create new work and inform broader discussions about photographic techniques and ideas. We will then have time to review and evaluate the images that have been made and consider how to develop our approach in the future.

'Jewellery Basics' Six Week Course with Emily

The all-new ‘Jewellery Basics’ Six Week Course has arrived! This course will take beginners through all the techniques that they need to know to get started in the wonderful world of jewellery making.

The course will follow the structure detailed below:

Week One will introduce you to jewellery tools and basic skills, including using a piercing saw to both cut sheet metal and create something in wax. In Week Two, we will be working with assorted wires, forming the metal and creating joins in order to make a ring. In Week Three, we will be working with a combination of sheet and wire. With the skills learnt so far, you can then start to experiment with your own forms and shapes as you learn how to make a pendant. The focus of this week will be joining methods. Week Four will focus on earrings and ‘finishing’. Polishing and finishing is an incredibly valuable skill to learn. For this part of the course, you will be taught how to sand and refine your work to a high standard using both papers and a polishing machine, with a whole variety of attachments. Week Five will focus on ‘design’; I will introduce a few, new, valuable skills to help explore a smorgasbord of possible ideas and how we can use the different techniques you have learnt over the previous weeks to create something especially for you! The last week, Week Six, will be your chance to bring together all of the skills you have learnt and create your own original piece. For this, you will need to supply your own materials based on your design. I will direct you to trustworthy suppliers and teach you how to order your silver, including how to best plan your pieces to suit your budget. If you prefer, you can revisit unfinished pieces from the previous weeks or even have your wax piece from week one cast and use this last evening to refine and polish it up!

The course begins on Thursday 20th February 2025, and will run for six weeks with the consecutive dates being 27th February, 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th March.

It costs £350pp, and requires a non-refundable deposit in order for you to secure your spot.

Friday Drawing & Painting Six Week Course with Rosie

Friday Six Week Drawing & Painting Course 10am-1pm

Friday 10th January - 14th February £260

Build confidence in your art and learn new skills within an art historical context.

Rosie Parmley’s classes offer a rich learning experience that build confidence within a vibrant art community. Her courses offer an opportunity to exhibit in the annual Summer Exhibition at The Colour Factory. She likes to share her skills through a range materials and sometimes less traditional resources too! Rosie references her own practice and that of a famous master painter in her courses eg from Matisse to the St Ives artists like Sandra Blow. Her classes teach a variety of skills from observational drawing studies, memory painting to abstraction. She frequently parallels the courses with current major exhibitions. In the warmer months her classes make the most of the fabulous garden at the studios and the local surroundings – en plein air eg Winchester Cathedral and the Hospital of St Cross. There are lots of demonstrations and one to one support/feedback in a small friendly class.

Classes include materials and refreshments. All you need is a sketch book. This course is suitable for all abilities.

The Colour Factor has been the home of Rosie’s courses since 2016. She is a practicing artist who appeared as a contestant on Landscape Artist of the Year in 2021. She will be exhibiting @HandmadeinBritain in Waterperry Gardens in Oxford in June 2025.
